LIN111: Introduction to Linguistics

LIN 111 is a one-semester, three-credit units 100-level course. It is designed for students whose major discipline is English. The course consists of fourteen units which cover a general introduction to Linguistics (the scientific study of human language). The material has been developed with local examples suitable for Nigerian students. This course guide tells you briefly what the course is about, what course materials you will be using and how to work your way through these materials. It suggests some general guidelines for the amount of time you are likely to spend on each unit of the course. It also gives you some guidance on your tutor-marked assignments. You are advised to attend the tutorial classes to discuss your difficulties with your tutors.
