PCR811: Theories in Conflict Management
Welcome to PCR 811: Theories in Conflict Management. PCR 811 is a three-unit course. It introduces you to the basic concepts, perspectives and theories of conflict management. It is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the major perspectives and theories relating to the management of conflicts at various stages.
You will explore the processes, and dimensions of conflict management. Important concepts in these processes discussed include: Third party intervention, mediation, negotiation, arbitration and African traditional conflict management forms. It also explores several issues, such as ethnicity, culture, communication, and public policy making and their implications for conflict management. Other issues include disarmament and arms control, preventive and multi-track diplomacy. As a theoretical course it deals with the various attempts to create taxonomy of conflicts worldwide with special attention on causes and sources of conflicts in Africa. The global framework of conflict management is also dealt with in great detail. These include international and national peace promotion agencies, including non-state actors. Particular attention is paid to the United Nations role in conflict management.
